Current Topics Seminar

Speaker Toby Johnson
Title An Introduction to Random Matrix Theory
Date February 3 4:00pm PDL C-36
You can probably imagine what random matrices are, but you'll be surprised at how they behave. In this introductory talk, we'll see the basic objects and discuss the main questions of random matrix theory. There won't be any proofs. My goal is to show you ideas and techniques that give a feel for the subject. We'll hear about the recent resolution of some big conjectures, and we'll see how the subject pops up in combinatorial problems and even in the Riemann hypothesis. If you're considering taking Ioana Dumitriu's topics class next quarter, this talk will give you an idea of what it's about. This talk is intended to be accessible to all graduate students. Familiarity with the most basic notions of probability and measures would be helpful, but I'll avoid technical details as much as possible.
