Title Higher Dimensional Algebraic Geometry.
Date February 2, 4:00pm PDL C-36
Higher dimensional algebraic geometry is a modern branch of algebraic geometry that went through a major development during the 80s and early 90s and a sort of second phase recently. Nowadays it is used in an essential way in most areas of algebraic geometry and in other parts of mathematics. In this talk I will demonstrate the powers of higher dimensional algebraic geometry by showing an example of how one can obtain non-trivial results on plane curves using very simple basic algebro-geometric principles working in arbitrary dimensions. Unfortunately this will not be an application of the theory developed in the 80s and later, but hopefully it will give enough insight to make people want to find out more about this area.
