Announcements:

o   Welcome to Math 308! The first day of class is January 5.

o   If you did not get the syllabus or first assignment in class, please find them on this website. The first assignment is posted under the Homework/Lectures link.

o   The second homework assignment, due 1/16, is now posted under the Homework/Lectures link.

o   The third homework assignment, due 1/23, is now posted under the Homework/Lectures link and on the discussion board. Also, do not forget that the first midterm is coming up quickly. It will be on Wednesday the 28th in class. If you will have to miss class that day, then it is important that you let me know as soon as possible.

o   I have posted solutions to the first homework assignment, including the challenge problem, here.

o   There is a new challenge problem due 1/30 posted under the Homework/Lectures link, and on the discussion board.

o   You can find the review sheet for the first midterm here.

o   The fourth assignment is now posted under the Homework/Lectures link, and on the discussion board.

o   Here are the statistics and approximate grade levels from the first midterm:

Mean: 70

>94

4.0

Upper Quartile

>80

Score of 80 is a 3.6

Median

71

Score of 71 is a 3.2

Lower Quartile

<60

Score of 60 is 2.8

40

Score of 40 is a 2.0. 40 is the lowest passing score.

o   If you scored less than 60 on the exam, then you have probably fallen behind in the class and should come to my office hours, or seek out some other help. You may also need to dedicate more time to studying for this class. For a three credit class, you should be spending six hours a week studying on your own outside of lecture.

o   The fifth assignment is now posted under the Homework/Lectures link, and on the discussion board.

o   Here are the statistics and approximate grade levels from the second midterm:

Mean: 69.6

>90

4.0

Upper Quartile

>79

Score of 79 is a 3.6

Median

71.5

Scores of 71 or 72 are a 3.2

Lower Quartile

<60

Score of 60 is a 2.8

40

o   As with the first exam, if you scored less than 60 then you probably need to dedicate more time to this class, and perhaps seek out some help with studying.
