Textbook

Elementary Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems

   By W. E. Boyce and R. C. DiPrima, 9th edition

Starting Autumn 2009, we are using the 9th edition of text by Boyce-DiPrima. In previous quarters we used the 8th edition. Briefly, the changes related to our study are

(i)                  Sections 3.4 through 3.9 have been renumbered 3.3 through 3.8, and

(ii)                a few problems have been added, renumbered, or slightly changed.

You could choose to use the old edition of the book. But for homework problems, you have to look at a 9th edition (at the library, or a friend’s copy) or you could check

here for a detailed list of changes between editions produced by Prof. Hart Smith.

Course Plan

Chapter 2: Sections 1—5, 7

Chapter 3: Sections 1,4,5,6,8,9

Chapter 6: Sections 1—4

Important

  1. Make ups are permitted only under very exceptional circumstances.
  2. Late homework will not be accepted, but the lowest homework grade will be dropped.
  3. Feel free to work with other students on your homework, but you must write the solutions yourself.
  4. Grader will grad two or three problems out of each assignment carefully, and check the completeness of the remaining problems.
  5. A piece of note (8.5×11 inches, letter sized, one sided) will be allowed on the midterm and the final, along with a scientific (but not graphing) calculator.
