Math 3A, Summer 2011

Note: Though this course has ended, this course webpage remains available for students to get a good idea of how my previous classes have been. In addition to old homeworks and exams (with partial solutions to each), one may find the class averages on each assignment, exam, and overall grades. I do not include the final letter grades as this depends on other factors not evident simply by the class average.
Office: MS 7905
Office Hours: Tuesday 2-4, Friday 1-2
Classroom: MS 4000A
Hours of Instruction: 11-12:50, MTW
Textbook: Calculus for Biology and Medicine, 3rd Ed., by Neuhauser.
Material Covered: We will try to keep with the standard rubric, See the Agenda below for a rough schedule of when material will be covered.
Homework: There will be homeworks due each Wednesday. I will assign between 20 and 30 problems per homework (except for the first week). Homework must be turned in during the first 5 minutes of class, or it will not be accepted. In the final grade, I will drop your lowest homework score.
  • Homework 1, Due June 23 in your TA section. Average: 91%
  • Homework 2, Due June 29 in first 5 minutes of class. Average: 91%
  • Homework 3, Due July 6 in first 5 minutes of class. Average: 90%

  • Homework 5, Due July 20 in first 5 minutes of class. Average: 92%
  • Homework 6, Due July 26 in first 5 minutes of class. Average: 99%
Here is a list of recommended problems from the textbook for you to practice on your own that are relevant to the material we are covering. These are not inteded to be handed in!
Recitations: Section 1:
  • TA: Anand Rajagopalan
  • Class time: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9-9:50am
  • Classroom: MS 5138
Section 2:
  • TA: Anand Rajagopalan
  • Class time: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10-10:50am
  • Classroom: MS 5203
TA office hours: Wednesday 4-6 for weeks 2 and 4, Thursday 11-1 on all other weeks.
Exams: There will be two midterms on the Thursdays of the second and 4th week during recitation, and a final on the last day of class (July 27th). There are no make up exams. There is, however, a grading schema that will allow for one final to be dropped (see below).
Grading: One of the following grading schemas will determine your grade, depending on which gives you the higher grade:
  • Homework 20%, Midterm1 20%, Midterm 2 20% Final 40%
  • Homework 20%, Midterm 1 or 2 20%, Final 60%
The second schema allows for you to drop the score of your lowest midterm.
The score of your lowest homework will be dropped.
I will compute your letter grades at the end of the quarter depending on the overall class performance. Class average: 72%
Calculators: Calculators may be needed on homeworks, but are prohibited during exams.
Cheating:
