The percentage of students who withdrew from Math 124 decreased after 1997, Χ2 (3, N=5457) = 82.1, p < .001.

The percentage of students who withdrew from Math 125 decreased after 1997, Χ2 (3, N=3235) = 17.1, p = .001.

Statistical Tests of Effects of Course, Year, and Student Sex (see also the graph below)

Students performed better in MATH124 (M = 3.23) than in MATH125 (M = 2.94), F(1,3055) = 595, p < 10-120.

A significant difference between MATH124 and MATH125 grades was observed all three years.

  • In 1997-98: Mdiff = .35, F(1,3055) = 194, p < 10-43.
  • In 2001-02: Mdiff = .21, F(1,3055) = 85, p < 10-20.
  • In 2002-03: Mdiff = .26, F(1,3055) = 128, p < 10-29.
  • In 2003-04: Mdiff = .33, F(1,3055) = 201, p < 10-44.

Grades in both MATH courses increased from 1997-98 to 2003-04, F(3,3055) = 18.89, p < 10-23.  For MATH124, each year’s average grade was higher than the year preceding it, F(3,3253) = 27.81, p < 10-12.  For MATH125, average grades in the 3 years post-1997 were: 1) higher than 1997-1998, but 2) statistically equivalent to one another, F(3,3253) = 18.83, p < 10-12.

Women and men performed similarly in MATH 124 (Ms = 3.22 vs. 3.23), but in MATH 125 women (M = 3.00) outperformed men (M = 2.91), F(1,3429) = 9.3, p = .002.  Follow-up analyses revealed significant differences between men’s and women’s average grades in 2001-2 and 2002-3.
