Student Guide:

Week 1 is a short week during Autumn term. Your instructor may use this week to review precalculus concepts, as suggested by the referenced textbook material. Alternatively, your instructor may instead proceed with material in week 2. Your individual instructor will make this clear in class. Precalculus is an assumed prerequisite for calculus.

  • Constructing tangent lines to curves is a key idea in beginning calculus. With this in mind, the above Supplement will guide you through understanding tangent lines in the context of circles. Your instructor may or may not discuss this material in class.
  • A supplement on exponential modeling is included above; this goes along with section 1.5 of the text. Your instructor may or may not cover this material.
  • The homework problems cover a wide variety of precalculus topics. In some cases, we have included a hint to indicate what relevant topic you will need to review. Some of these problems are quite challenging. Some of the homework problems become computationally tedious. This is by design, since certain upcoming calculus calculations require that our algebra skills be finely tuned. Again, each instructor will decide on the particular aspects of precalculus to emphasize and identify which of the homework problems are assigned in class.
