Student Guide:Week 5 is the week of Midterm #1. Derivatives of trig functions are covered and a supplement on sinusoidal functions is provided for review. We begin discussion of the chain rule, which is the most important rule for derivative calculations. Once all of the basic rules are mastered, we can compute a large number of derivatives without resorting to limit computations. (However, it is important to note that all these rules are established using limits; in other words, limits must be used at some stage of the game.) The ability to compute derivatives using the "rules" is a skill that takes practice. You should do enough of these problems so that derivative computation becomes routine. Be especially careful with your algebra whenever you simplify an expression.
