Student Guide:

Week 2 initiates the study of calculus. Section 2.1 discusses tangent lines. This is the fundamental problem that differential calculus was invented to solve. Sections 2.2 and 2.3 are the beginning of calculus; you should thoroughly read these sections of the text.
  • The websupplement reading parametric equations.pdf will bring the key terminology surrounding parametric equations into focus. We include a couple of parametric equation problems in week2probs.pdf. The idea of parametric equations was introduced in the last problem of week1probs.pdf.
  • An introduction to average and instantaneous velocity occurs in the worksheet. You will spend much more time on this in class.
  • The homework2.pdf problems continue to review precalculus concepts. If assigned, pay particular attention to the problems involving "exponential modeling" and the technique outlined in the websupplement ExponentialModeling.pdf.
  • The lectures this week give an introduction to "limits"; this is the singular new idea that sets calculus apart from previous math courses you have taken. Limits are the key foundation upon which all of calculus depends.
