Course Information

Instructor: Mario Micheli, C-434 Padelford Hall, mariomicheli@gmail.com

Office hours: several Math 324 instructors share office hours in the Spring '13 quarter; click here for the weekly schedule. You may choose to go to any of the listed office hours. My own students (sections A and B) may also request individual appointments with me.

Textbook and syllabus: James Stewart, Multivariable Calculus, Early Transcendentals, 7th edition, Thomson Brooks/Cole, 2012. We will cover Chapters 15 and 16. Click here for a tentative lecture-by-lecture syllabus. It is being updated as the quarter progresses.

Prerequisites: either 2.0 in Math126 or 2.0 in Math136.

Homework: it will be assigned through WebAssign. It is due every Friday, at the beginning of your own section (9:30am for section A, 10:30am for section B); your best 8 out of 10 homework assignments will be used in the computation of your final grade. Late homework will not be accepted.

Quizzes: we will have at least five quizzes of 10-15 minutes each. These will take place in class on Fridays. While the syllabus (which is periodically updated) may indicate that we will have one almost every Friday, it is more likely that we will have a total of five or six throughout the quarter. I will make weekly announcements to let you know whether or not we are having one on that specific week. In any case, your 4 best quizzes will be used in the computation of your final grade. During quizzes you will NOT be allowed to use books, printed material, notes, calculators or other electronic devices: just pencil and paper. Quizzes will typically be on topics covered in the previous one or two weeks of classes.

Exams: Besides the final exam, we will have a 50 minutes, in-class midterm exam on Friday May 10, 2013. You will be allowed to bring one letter-sized page (8.5" x 11") of hand-written notes to the midterm and final exams (both sides of the sheet of paper may be used); otherwise you will not be allowed to use other notes, books, printed material, calculators or electronic devices of any kind. The midterm exam will be on topics covered until Monday May 6, 2013 (included), whereas the final exam will be cumulative.

Grading: your final grade will be will be computed as follows:

            Points               %
Final exam         100             40%
