Mathematics Sequences. The following three sequences,
Math 402, 403, 404 Introduction to Modern Algebra;
Math 424, 425, 426 Concepts of Analysis;
Math 427, 428, 429 Topics in Applied Analysis;
are highly recommended as preparation for graduate study at the U. W. Department of Mathematics. At the least, one should take Math 427 and five quarters from the sequences 402, 403, 404 and 424, 425, 426. To be eligible for a Teaching Assistantship (TA) and financial support from the Math Department, the minimum grade in these courses is 3.3. For acceptance to the program, the absolute minimum grade is 3.0 for students who do not seek departmental support. Students pursuing the master's degree may be eligible for consideration with a solid course in only one of the above three sequences.
Examinations. Two are required for the PhD program: the general Graduate Record Examination (GRE), which consists of verbal, quantitative and analytical components, and the GRE subject test in Mathematics. High scores on the analytical component (750-800) are common; in contrast, high scores on the other two components are more distinctive. The maximum score on the subject test is 990, and scores above 800 are desirable. For some Master's programs, the math subject test is recommended but not required.
Letters of recommendation. You need three, from persons who know you well. Get to know some of your instructors by visiting with them. Don't wait until the end of the quarter to ask for a letter of recommendation.
