Final Exam - Solutions for both parts of the Final Exam have been posted. Here are some stats for the final (these are over both parts):

  • High = 109%
  • Average = 86%
  • Median = 90%
08-15-07

Lecture Slides - I was unable to fix the problem I was having with the lectures slides for the last two lectures. However, I was able to get the printer version to work, so I've posted those.

08-13-07

Office Hours - My office hours for this week are

  • Monday 1:00 - 3:00pm (MSC) and 5:00 - 7:00pm (PDL C-018)
  • Wednesday 1:00 - 3:00pm (MSC) and 5:00 - 7:00pm (PDL C-018)
  • Thursday 4:00 - 6:00m (PDL C-018)

Final Exam Update - For Part 2, I have decided to keep all 20 questions on the exam and give you a 25% discount. This means that you only have to do 15 of the 20 questions. If you can do more than 15, that's good and the additional questions will count as extra credit. So you could end up with 40 points out of 30 on this part.

Sample Problems - Answers for the sample problems have been posted on the Quizzes & Exams page.

Lecture Slides - The lecture slides for the last two lectures will be posted shortly (I'm still resolving some technical difficulties).

Final Exam - Information about the Final Exam has been posted on the Quizzes & Exams page.

Quoting People - The issue of quoting someone (namely me and Sarah) has come up more than once now so I feel like I need to address this. There is one hard and fast rule you should always remember when quoting someone (i.e., he/she said "..."): BE CAREFUL. There's nothing worse than quoting someone incorrectly. Here are two things to watch out for:

  1. If the person did not say it, don't say he/she did. In other words, don't put words in his/her mouth.
  2. Don't take the quote out of context. I realize that some people do this intentionally... they're called bad reporters and can usually be found working for a tabloid.

In most day-to-day circumstances, misquoting someone is unintentional (so we shouldn't take it personally). We just aren't being careful enough or perhaps our memory of what was said is inaccurate. In such a case, we simply correct ourselves and be on our way, remembering to be more careful next time. Afterall, we are all human and prone to mistakes. The best we can hope for is to learn from them.

08-01-07

Grades - I will take some time this weekend to look over your grades thus far in the course and give you some estimate of how well you need to do on the final exam in order to get the grade you desire. I'll arrange some time next week to make this information available to you.

07-22-07

Lecture Slides - The lecture slides for Lectures 14 (last Friday), 15 (this Monday), and 16 (this Wednesday) are forthcoming. I will try to have them up by Wednesday.

07-18-07

Lecture Schedule - There was a mixup in the schedule (I had Worksheet 14 listed twice). We'll go ahead and cover Worksheet 14 on Wednesday. On Friday, we'll return to cover Worksheet 13.

Quiz 2 - The quiz will consist of one story problem with several questions dealing with concepts we covered from Worksheets 9-14 (excluding 13).

7-06-07

Midterm #1 Update - The first midterm will only cover up through Worksheet 8.

Extra Office Hours - My office hours for next week will be

  • Monday 1:00 - 3:00pm (in the MSC)
  • Wednesday 1:00 - 2:00pm (in the MSC)

Review on Monday - During lecture next Monday, there will be time for you to ask any questions regarding the Midterm. You should come prepared with any questions you have from the old midterms I've asked you to look over. (By prepared, I mean that you should have tried the problem BEFORE asking me for help.)

HW 3 - You should definitely make sure you do this HW, even if it isn't collected. The material on it will show up on a quiz or exam (at some point). In particular, Worksheet 8 is covered on Midterm #1.

7-02-07

HW 2 Due Date - The due date for HW 2 has been postponed to Thursday, July 5.

Handout for Worksheet 6 - Here is the table for worksheet 6 with all the answers filled in. Please note that in many cases, there are alternate ways to phrase things.

Midterm #1 - Your first midterm is next Tuesday. More details regarding the midterm will be given later this week. For now, focus on the quiz.

7-02-07

Moved Office Hour - This Wednesday is a holiday. So the office hour on Wednesday is moved Tueday 1-2pm. This is only for this week.

6-29-07

Quiz 1 - The quiz will consist of one story problem with several questions dealing with any concepts we have covered up to and including Worksheet #6.

6-20-07

Extra Credit - To accomodate students who work full-time, I will be in my office this Thursday evening 6:00 - 7:00 so that you can stop by and get the extra credit.

6-19-07

HW Clarification - When the homework assignment says "Worksheet 1," it means that you should do the following:

  • Answer all the questions that are numbered and have a box around them. These appear interspersed throughout the worksheet.
  • Answer all the problems in the Problems section for Worksheet 1. These are labeled Problem 1-I, Problem 1-II, etc.

If one of the questions involves filling in a table or sketching a graph, you can find an extra copy of the table or graph in the back of the book under the Appendix Graphs and Tables.

MSC - It has been brought to my attention that the usual room for Math 111 (CMU B-006) will not be available to us this quarter. Instead, you should go to CMU B-014, which is right next door. This is the Math 120/4/5/6 MSC. One of the cubicles will be reserved for Math 111.

6-18-07

Textbook - I have been told that the version of the textbook with the yellow cover is the same as the one with the blue cover. So you are welcome to use either copy.

6-18-07

Extra Credit - The assignment is to stop by my office (PDL C-18) sometime this week while I'm there and introduce yourself. I'll ask you to fill out a card to help me remember you. The entire visit can be as short as 5 minutes or as long as I've planned to be in my office. Here's when I'll be in my office this week:

  • Monday 3:00 - 5:00pm
  • Tuesday 12:00 - 3:00pm
  • Wednesday 2:00 - 3:30pm
  • Thursday 12:00 - 3:00pm
  • Friday 1:00 - 2:00pm

Final Exam - Thanks to everyone who as already sent me an email. I'm pleased to see that you're starting the quarter off by staying on top of things. Since some of you have already indicated that you have another class (before/after ours), we are left with only one option for the final exam: part of it on Thursday and the rest on Friday (of the last week).

Textbook - Some of you have asked about whether or not you would be able to use an older copy of the textbook. I will find out today whether or not there were any significant changes and post my response on this page.

6-18-07

Welcome to Math 111! I hope you all enjoyed your break. We have a lot of work ahead of us. To help us stay on pace, we need to make sure you start out on the right foot. Here is what you need to do BEFORE the second lecture (on 6-20-07).

  1. Explore the course website (try all the links to the left) and familiarize yourself with where everything is located. In particular, make a note of the pages you will want to check on a regular basis (e.g., announcements, schedule, homework, etc.).
  2. Read through the syllabus and familiarize yourself with all components of this course (e.g., homework, activities, quizzes, exams, etc.).
  3. Read the FAQ thoroughly, and email me (at any point throughout the quarter) if you have any questions that are not addressed in the FAQ.
  4. Start HW 1!
