PRE-REQUISITE TOPICS, REVIEW AS NEEDED
ALGEBRA, Etc.
Some of the most common algebra mistakes made in calculus are
described at
http://www.math.hmc.edu/calculus/tutorials/algebrareview/
Please take a moment to understand these errors. They can cost you dearly on a
calculus problem, even if you did study the new material!
Your textbook has a reference page at the front. Review
Arithmetic Operations, Exponents and Radicals, Factoring Special Polynomials.
The rest of that page can come in handy at times too. We'll need area and
volumes later in the quarter.
TRIGONOMETRY
See the flip side of the reference page at the front of your textbook (reference page 2). We'll make heavy use of:
Trig Functions. Know sin x, cos x, tan x, sec x particularly well. You'll need: Right Angle Trigonometry, Graphs, Important Angles.
Fundamental Identities, especially the first 8 at the top.
Double-Angle Formulas for sin and cos.
Half-Angle Formulas. These can be derived from the Double-Angle, of course.
Inverse trig functions (this is on the first reference page at the back of the textbook, i.e. reference page 3)
MATH 124 Material
Derivatives:
Definition and geometric interpretation in terms of slopes
Rules for differentiating all the common functions (reference page 5: formulas 1-8, 9, 11, 13-18, 19-24)
Chain Rule
Product Rule
L'Hospital's Rule (textbook section 4.4)
Special Functions
Other than the trig and inverse trig functions, you need to know
the properties and special values of the exponential and logarithmic
functions.
See reference page 4.
