Math 111 — Summer 2011
8/22

Here is the solution sheet for the final. Your final exam grades are now also on Catalyst.

Enjoy your summer!

8/12

As usual, we'll have review sessions for the final:

  • times: Wednesday 12–1, Thursday 2:30–4:30
  • place: Math Study Center, Communications B-014

Here's the plan for the final week:

  • Monday: worksheet 23
  • Tuesday: group projects
  • Wednesday: review in lecture
  • Thursday: review in quiz section
  • Friday: final exam, group projects due by midnight

In case you didn't pick up a copy of the group project description, you can find it here.

8/9

Homework 7 (a short assignment) is now on the homework page.

For those of you weren't in class yesterday, I announced the group projects, which are starting this Friday. They will count as 1/3 of your final exam grade. The intent is to reduce the pressure on the final itself and (equally importantly) give you a chance to do tackle more real-world problems. They should be challenging, and fun.

Come to class this Friday to get a group and a project.

8/3

You can now find homework 6 on the homework page.

7/29

I forgot to pass out the questions for review in class today, so here's the link to them. These cover what we've done in WS 10–15 — you should know how to answer each of them!

Just like last time, we'll be holding two review sessions next Monday for the second midterm:

  • times: 12:30–1:30, 3:45–5:00
  • place: Math Study Center, Communications B-014

Solutions for Tuesday's test prep are here.

7/28

I've posted a handout on the overviews page which shows you how to solve equations with square roots in more detail.

Also, don't forget that the overviews page and the exam archive have lots of material to help you study for the midterm.

7/22

Homework 5 is now up on the homework page.

7/18

Here are the solutions to the first midterm.

Also, I will be moving my Wednesday morning hours to Thursday afternoon, from 2:30 to 3:30, in the MSC, since I think that will work better for more people (see the schedule on the left). If you have questions on any aspect of the class, come on by.

7/15

The fourth assignment is now on the homework page.

7/13

This week we'll have an activity on Thursday instead of Tuesday because of the midterm. So, don't forget to come to quiz section Thursday.

7/10

Here's the tentative grading scale for the course.

We'll be holding two review sessions tomorrow for the first midterm. Here's the info:

  • times: 12:30–1:30, 3:30–4:30
  • place: Math Study Center, Communications B-014

For the review sessions, we'll put together a packet of challenging past exam problems to help you practice for the midterm. We'll be doing the same thing in both sessions, so you can come to whichever one fits your schedule better.

7/6

I'm interested in knowing how the class is going for you so far. If you weren't in lecture this Wednesday, here's a link to a survey on Math 111. Filling it out will earn you participation credit and help me improve the class. The deadline for completing it is next Monday, July 11.

7/4

Many people ran into trouble on problem 2 on the first week's activity (Rates of Change) by misinterpreting the graph. The key is that the graph shows changes in opening price from day to day, instead of the opening prices themselves. For instance, the leftmost dot on the graph indicates that the price rose by 0.03 from day 0 to day 1, the next dot shows the price rose by 0 from day 1 to day 2, and so on.

It's important to understand graphs like this, so if you received 5/10 for misinterpreting the graph, you can earn points back by correcting your mistakes and turning the activity in by Wednesday, July 6.

7/2

The third homework assignment is now posted.

6/28

I've posted a summary of some of our graph techniques. I'll expand it as we go along.

6/25

I've posted overviews of the material covered in the prologue and worksheets 1–2, written by Dr. Loveless.

As we go along in the course, I'll post more overviews periodically, so check back often.

6/24

The second homework assignment is now posted. I'll be choosing my permanent office hours this weekend, so don't forget to email me what times would work best for you.

6/20

Here's the link to the background survey. Fill it out by Friday for participation credit.

Also, the first homework assignment is now posted on the homework page.

6/14
