Stephen McKeown
I am from Tyler, Texas. I started college at Tyler Junior College, and
then attended the University of North
Texas, where I studied math and
physics. I had a wonderful time at UNT, and I would recommend it to
anybody interested in studying math.
While there, I was very active in
the Society of Physics Students. I still really enjoy learning and
thinking about physics, and interactions between math and physics
continue to be a big interest.
After UNT, I decided I wanted to be a lawyer, so I attended Yale Law
School for three years. I took the bar and am a licensed lawyer
in Texas, but I really missed math and decided I wanted to learn it
much better, so I came to the University of Washington to get a Ph.D. starting in autumn 2010.
Besides math and physics, I have quite a few interests. I really enjoy
reading when I get time (J. M. Barrie is my favorite author).
I like programming computers (till math kidnapped me, I was a
computer science major). I also like landscape photography, though what
started out as
an attempt to drive around looking for cool places to take photographs
turned into an enjoyment of just driving around for its own sake, so
ofttimes these days I will just drive without a camera; therefore I
would also list driving as a major hobby. I drive a 1991 Toyota Camry,
which is an amazing car. I have put almost 100,000 miles on my current
Camry! I am interested in some areas of philosophy (thought I am not an
expert in any). I also love a lot of music, mostly
romantic-era (Tchaikovsky) or classic rock. American history and
politics are another big interest. Finally, but my no means least, I
greatly enjoy spending time with friends talking or hanging out.
