Important dates: The midterm is on Friday, November 1, and the final is 8:30-10:20 a.m. on Friday, December 13 (yikes!). You must use a blue book for exams.
Office Hours: Monday 4:00-5:00 in Padelford C-418, and by appointment.
Chapter 1 is primarily background, but we will briefly refresh our minds about induction, summation notation, and prime numbers. Chapters 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 will covered in detail. In Chapter 7 we will cover sections 7.3, 7.4, and 7.5.
Your grade will be based on the homework, the midterm, and the final. Your best 7 homework scores will contribute 25%, the midterm will contribute 25%, and the final will contribute 50%. You need not attend the lectures, but you are responsible for the material and information that is handed out or discussed in each lecture. Except in extraordinary circumstances, late homework will not be accepted. If you miss the homework deadline, that homework will be one of those which does not contribute to your best seven. I cannot overemphasize the importance of doing all the homework promptly and regularly. It is the only way to learn mathematics. The assigned homework is a minimum---to do well in this course, you will have to work more problems than are assigned. In each homework set only three problems will be graded; each is worth 5 points.
