Math 506, Algebra

Spring '97

Important dates: The final is 8:30-10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, . You must use a blue book for exams.

Office Hours: Monday 4:00-5:00 in Padelford C-418, and by appointment.

The textbook for the class is ``Algebra'', by R. S. Irving. This quarter's material centers on commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. The relevant chapters from Irving's book are 17 through 21; actually he covers several topics we will not have time to pursue, but browsing through those sections will add some context and motivation for the material we do cover. You might also visit the notes for an introductory algebraic geometry course taught by Jim Milne at the University of Michigan.

Your grade will be based on the homework, and the final. Your best 7 homework scores will contribute 50%, and the final will contribute 50%. In each homework set only three problems will be graded; each is worth 5 points. Except in extraordinary circumstances, late homework will not be accepted. If you miss the homework deadline, that homework will be one of those which does not contribute to your best seven. I cannot overemphasize the importance of doing the homework promptly and regularly. It is the only way to learn mathematics.
