Final Exam Information:
The final exam will be held on Saturday, March 15, from 1:30 to 4:20 p.m. in
SMITH 105. You will be allowed to use a scientific calculator and one
sheet of handwritten notes. The use of graphing calculators and other electronic devices
(including mp3 players and the like) is expressly forbidden during the exam.
The exam will be cumulative.
Announcements:
- Announced 3/21/2008: Here are the grades. Please read the following very carefully before e-mailing
me with question:
- Students are listed by the last 4 digits of their student ID numbers.
Any leading zeroes are omitted. So, for example, if your student ID is 510001,
then your ID is listed as 1, rather than 0001.
- All of your homework scores and quiz scores are listed.
However, I have dropped the lowest scores in the compuation of your grade.
- If any of your scores has been incorrectly recorded,
you will need to make arrangements to show me the graded assignment after
the start of Spring Quarter. I cannot change any scores without seeing the
graded assignment.
- The median on Exam I was a 48/60 (80%) and the mean was a 44.5/60 (74%).
- The median on Exam II was a 44/65 (68%) and the mean was a 41.5/65 (64%).
- The median on the Final Exam was a 66/100.
- I keep all my final exams for one full quarter, but you are welcome
to stop by to take a look at your final exam after the beginning of
Spring Quarter. If you'd like to have your exam to keep, stop by at the
end of Spring Quarter.
- Have a great Spring Break!
- Announced 3/11/2008: Here are the answers to the Sample Final.
- Announced 3/7/2008: Here is a Sample Final. Answers will be posted early next week.
- Announced 3/5/2008: Here are the answers to Sample Quiz 6.

me with question:

However, I have dropped the lowest scores in the compuation of your grade.
- Estimating grades at this point in the quarter is difficult
since we have so few grades to go on. Since, at the end of the
quarter, 70% of your grade will be based on your exam scores, I have
weighted your exams scores more heavily than homeworks and quizzes to
compute this estimated grade.
- If any of your scores has been incorrectly recorded, please show the
graded item to your TA. We cannot change any scores without seeing the
graded assignment.
- The median on Exam I was a 48/60 (80%) and the mean was a 44.5/60 (74%).
- The median on Exam II was a 44/65 (68%) and the mean was a 41.5/65 (64%).
- I do not give extra credit. The way to improve your grade is to
improve your scores, especially on exams.
- Announced 3/3/2008: I've eliminated Problem #3 from Section 12.5 from your homework assignment this week.
- Announced 2/24/2008: Here are the answers to the Sample Exam.
- Announced 2/21/2008: Exam II will be held in Quiz Section on Tuesday,
February 26. You will be allowed to use a scientific calculator (no graphing
calculators allowed) and one sheet of hand-written notes.
The exam will cover: anti-derivatives, approximate areas, definite integrals,
the fundamental theorem, applications of the integral (area between curves,
cumulative change, average values), techniques of integration (substitution,
integration by parts, partial fractions), and improper integrals.
To study, you should make sure that you understand how to do all assigned
homework problems, sample quizzes, and quizzes.
Once you feel comfortable with all the material, you should attempt this
Sample Exam. (Answers will be posted
over the weekend.) Bring questions to lecture on Monday.
- Announced 2/19/2008: Here are the answers to Sample Quiz 5.
- Announced 2/15/2008: I've made a change to the posted homework. I'm removing Section 7.3 #35 and replacing it with #45.
- Announced 2/12/2008: Here are the answers to Sample Quiz 4.
- Announced 2/12/2008: Here is Sample Quiz 4. Answers will come later today.
- Announced 2/5/2008: Here are the answers to Sample Quiz 3.

- Estimating grades at this point in the quarter is difficult
since we have so few grades to go on. Since, at the end of the
quarter, 70% of your grade will be based on your exam scores, I have
weighted your first exam score more heavily than homeworks and quizzes to
compute this estimated grade.
- If any of your scores has been incorrectly recorded, please show the
graded item to your TA. We cannot change any scores without seeing the
graded assignment.
- The median on Exam I was a 48/60 (80%) and the mean was a 44.5/60 (74%).

improve your scores, especially on exams.
- Announced 1/27/2008: Here are the answers to Sample Exam I.
- Announced 1/25/2008: I've re-compiled the answers to Sample Quiz 2. Let me know if they're still not loading properly. (They're working fine on my computer...but then again the last version worked fine for me, too.)
- Announced 1/24/2008: Exam I will be held in Quiz Section on Tuesday,
January 29. You will be allowed to use a scientific calculator (no graphing
calculators allowed) and one sheet of hand-written notes.
The exam will cover: derivatives, graphing, optimization,
and L'Hopital's Rule. (I am postponing Section 5.8 until after the exam.)
To study, you should make sure that you understand how to do all assigned
homework problems, sample quizzes, and quizzes.
(If you're struggling with derivatives, you may also
want to do the exercises listed in the Review
of Derivative Rules that I posted the first week of class.)
Once you feel comfortable with all the material, you should attempt this
Sample Exam. (Answers will be posted
over the weekend.) Bring questions to lecture on Monday.
- Announced 1/22/2008: Here are the answers to Sample Quiz 2.
- Announced 1/16/2008: I will provide you with a few of the derivative rules
on the first quiz. Here is the list of the rules that I will provide. Any others that you think you'll need should be memorized.
- Announced 1/15/2008: Here are the answers to Sample Quiz 1.
- Announced 1/8/2008: On the homeowrk problems from Section 5.2, the first
few ask you to find the intervals on which the function is increasing,
decreasing, concave up, and concave down. They then ask you to use a graphing
calculator to graph the function and check that your intervals are correct.
I just want you to do the first part: find all the intervals. You do not
need to graph the function (using a calculator or any other method).
- Announced 1/6/2008: Please take a little time to get to know the features
of this webpage. In particular, read through the FAQ and homework guidelines,
look over the course calendar, and find the homework schedule.
Here is the Review of Derivative Rules.
If you've recently taken calculus, your derivative-taking skills are probably
just fine. However, if it's been a while (or you've not seen many derivatives),
you may want to take some time in the first couple of weeks to familiarize
yourself with these rules. Take this review sheet and your text to Quiz
Section this Tuesday (1/8) so that you can work on the exercises together
with your TA. If you can, get through all of the first page before the
first quiz section.
