Texts:

  • Calculus by Salas, Hille, Etgen (8th edition).
  • How to Read and Do Proofs by D. Solow, (On reserve: Mathematics Research Library).
  • Elementary Differential Equations by Boyce and diPrima. (Math 307 textbook. There are lots of copies of this text in various libraries around campus.)

Content: We will cover Chapters 10, 11, 12, 13, 18 together with parts of Chapter 9 of Salas and Hille. There will be some additional material on Taylor expansions (Chapter 11) and second-order differential equations (Chapter 18).

Guidelines: In learning the material the homework plays a key role and therefore it is given weight in the grading. There will be weekly homework assignments, due on Thursday at the beginning of quiz section. The weekly homework will only be partially graded. Namely an array of problems will be assigned each week but most of them are not to be handed in. In general students will only be asked to turn between two and four problems per homework. Those will be graded. It is the student's responsibility to do all the non-hand-in problems and to make sure that she/he knows whether her/his solution to a given problem is adequate. Taking advantage of office hours is highly recommended. NO late homework will be accepted. The lowest homework score will be dropped, thus there will be no penalty for missing one assignment. Students are encouraged to work together in the homework, but they must write it individually. The general rules for academic honesty apply to all written work. Students are expected to read the textbook.

Homework will be assigned at least a week prior to the due date (except for the first homework which is due on Thursday, January 6th) . It will be collected on Thursday at the beginning of class. Homework will count 25% of the course grade.

There will be two 50 minute midterm tests (1/28/00 and 2/25/00), each one will count 20% of the course grade. There will be a two hour closed book final exam which will count 35% of the course grade. The midterm tests and the final exam will be closed book but you will be allowed to bring notes on a notebook size sheet of paper.

    Important Dates:

  • First Midterm: Friday, January 28, 2000.
  • Second Midterm: Friday, February 25, 2000.
  • Final Exam: Monday, March 13, 2000 (8:30-10:20 am).

  • Grading policy: The grades will be determined on the basis of the following percentages. Homework 25%. Midterms 20% each. Final exam 35%.
