Text: Elementary Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems by
Boyce-DiPrima (Custom 9th ed.).
We will
cover most of chapter 2, 3 and 6, focusing on practical problem-solving rather
than theory.
Homework: The homework will be
assigned almost everyweek, and collected at the beginning of class on the dates
noted in the website and calendar.
If you cannot make it to a lecture, my mailbox is located in Padelford C-120
(the Math lounge); arrange to have
your homework placed in my mailbox at least 30 minutes before lecture starts on
the day homework is due.
Late homework solutions will
NOT be accepted. Lowest homework grade will be dropped.
Please be sure to make your
homework neat, readable, and stapled. A poorly written assignment will
get an equally poor grade. There will be one point (+1, not extra) for stapling
homework, and one point for nicely written.
In-class
working credit: this is 2
points for each chapter. I’ll give you small problems to work in class. If you
solve one problem correctly, you’ll get 1 point. If there is a minor mistake,
you’ll get 0.5. Your total score for this part can exceed 2. If it does, the
extra will go into the corresponding midterms and final.
Midterms, Final: the
midterms and final will consist of problems very similar to those assigned as
in homework, in lectures and in the textbook.
There are no make-up exams. If you have a compelling,
unavoidable, and well-documented reason for missing a test, you should speak
with me as soon as possible.
Grading: Your course grade
will be determined by how you do relative to the class as a whole. Grade will
be made up of the following:
Homework 10%
In-class working 5%
Midterm 1 25%
Midterm 2 25%
Final 35%
General: Only scientific
calculators are allowed quizzes, midterms and final, but you won’t also need
them. You will be allowed one note sheet on the midterm and final, front and
back, handwritten by yourself.
