Math 307 D Midterms
Info on the Midterms is posted here. There will be two Midterms. Each Midterm is worth 50 points. You will be given 60 minutes of class time to complete each Midterm.
Midterm 1:
- Date: July 5th
- When: 6:50-7:50
- Rules:
- One single-sided page of notes will be allowed
- Non-graphing calculators are allowed
- Material covered
- All material from chapter 2 covered in class or in the homework
- There will be 5 questions total:
- Separable equations
- Autonomous equations and Euler's Method
- Linear equations
- Exact equations
- Modeling
- Methods of integration that you MUST know:
- Integration by Parts
- Partial Fractions (product of linear factors case)
- Some practice problems you should be sure to do
- § 2.3 # 21, 26
- § 2.5 # 4, 5
- § 2.7 # 3 (a, b), 4 (a, b)
- For Separable, Linear and Exact equations you need to be able to do all the HW problems dealing with these types of differential equations and you MUST be able to use the methods of integration listed above.
- Here is the midterm from the last 307 class I taught. Just look at problems 1-4.
- Also be sure to look at the solutions I've posted for some of the HW problems: they are on the HW page.
- Results
- Stats: Average: 38.4, Median: 39.5, High Score: 49
- Grading: Grades where very good on this test as is illustrated by the high median
- Comments:
- Problem 1: This is a separable equation, to solve it you needed to use partial fractions. Also I took off one point if you magically got rid of the absolute value signs.
- Problem 2: Part (a): remember that the second derivative is given by the chain rule. Part (b): most people got this one
- Problem 3: This is a straight-forward linear equation, to solve it you need to use integration by parts; most people got full credit here.
- Problem 4: This is an exact equation; many people did not integrate xlnx correctly, you need to use integration by parts.
- Problem 5: Nearly everyone included the absolute value in their expression for the resistance force. If you do this you only get an equation which is valid half the time. The point is that the resistance force always acts in the direction opposite the direction of movement.
