Homework 1 is due Friday, January 18

I have posted two new handouts. The first contains two examples of matrices being reduced to reduced echelon form via elementary row operations (including the example we started working out in class). The second is a proof that a linear system obtained by applying the third kind of elementary operation (adding a constant multiple of one equation to another) is equivalent to the original system.

* Equivalent Systems (Ei + kEj)

I have posted a new handout where I have tried to clarify the definitions of echelon form and reduced echelon form:

I have posted two new handouts. The first recalls the properties of addition and multiplication of real numbers (associativity, commutativity, etc.). The second includes a list of mathematical symbols I would like to start using in class to try and speed up the lectures. Please take a look at both of these before class on Wednesday, January 16.

* Mathematical Symbols

Monday, January 21 is a holiday. There will be no class that day.

The first midterm will be Wednesday, January 30 in class. There will be a CLUE Review session on Tuesday, January 29 from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm in Mary Gates Hall 287.

I have posted solutions to some of the problems from the first homework set, including problem 1.5.59. I will try and update the document with additional solutions as the quarter progresses.

I have posted a practice midterm to help you study for the first midterm.
