A Topological Surface Fest

Surfaces on Display! I don't normally tackle a Brown Bag in the last week of the quarter, but Pete Littig has come up with a splendid option that has a time limit, so we shall forge ahead. It seems that he assigned his 324 class a project which turned out to be stunningly successful. They were to find out about and construct a model of some interesting surface. We will spend part of our time admiring the results (I bet you never saw a Möbius band with a zipper all the way down the middle!) For the rest of the time, we will discuss the question Pete himself posed as I was admiring the display: "Yeah, but why did it work so wonderfully this time when other assignments that have felt about the same haven't worked at all?" In deference to Pete's office hours, this Brown Bag will start at
