What do grades do for us?

If you were to find a note in your mail informing you that the course you were scheduled to teach next quarter had just been declared credit/no credit, how much real impact would it have? What substantive changes in your plans would result? In your expectations?

I am not proposing to foment a revolution, but the question of what grades do for our students--and to them--strikes me as worth thinking about. I propose that we think about it together at noon this Thursday Jan 26 in the Math Lounge.
