Brown Bag Teaching/Learning Seminar #6
BROWN BAG ON PROJECTS

One of the Hot Items in the current educational agenda of the mathematical community is the use of projects. There is lots of room for discussion of pros and cons, but one aspect is unambiguous: if you play your cards right, students can produce some absolutely magnificent results. Last quarter, Siva Athreya required projects of his students in 308, and he clearly did play his cards right, because some of the results are downright spectacular.

For this Thursday's Brown Bag, Siva will launch the discussion by showing us some of his students' work, and telling us a bit about how he set up the assignment, and what worked (and didn't). If you have some examples of projects you have worked with--or tales of same--please bring them. We'll see which way the discussion goes from there!

We will meet at noon on January 16 in the Math Lounge.
