Brown Bag Teaching/Learning Seminar #5
The Joint Meetings

This week's Brown Bag will have no external guest speaking, but plenty of external news. The San Antonio Joint Meetings had such a wealth of sessions, panels and discussions dealing with teaching/learning issues that there is no way that even a bunch of us can do them justice. We'll try, though. Rebecca Tyson, Jim King, Ramesh Gangolli and I are set to describe our various experiences, and we are hoping that others whom I have not officially dragooned will do so likewise. And if you come and ask questions, you may well get details that none of us thought to put in.

We will meet in the Math Lounge at 12:30 on Thursday, January 21.

Addendum:

I can now provide a little more detail about some of the sessions I suspect people would like to hear about:

Ramesh attended (and will tell us about) a session on the draft of the updated NCTM Standards, now under heavy discussion and much open to comments and suggestions.

Jim attended (and will tell us about) a lot of different sessions having to do with new ideas in the teaching of geometry.

I attended (and will at least say a few words about) a talk on the Role of Research in Improving School Mathematics.

Rebecca got to a whole batch, but I'm hoping that in particular she will tell us a bit about the session on Mathematics Education and Mistaken Philosophies of Mathematics. It caused quite a stir!

All this will take place tomorrow (Thursday) at 12:30 in the Math Lounge.
