It has been pointed out to me that the only "introductory" publication in English about Didactique is a whole book (Brousseau, Theory of Didactical Situations in Mathematics, Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1997), which makes slightly heavy going for a neophyte. I have in mind filling this gap with a monograph, but would like to make sure that the monograph speaks to other people's questions and interests, and not just mine. In the hope of accomplishing that, I have, with the kind permission of the author, translated an article Guy Brousseau wrote introducing Didactique to a congress of Mexican mathematics educators, entitled "Education and Didactique of Mathematics." My hope is to use comments and queries generated by this article to shape the outline of the monograph in question. It follows as the night the day that I would very much appreciate any comments and queries that anyone reading this article would be so kind as to send me.
One more note: this is a somewhat slapdash translation, not one honed to publishability on its own. In particular, I have been decidedly sloppy in dealing with the ever-vexed issue of distinguishing "savoir" and "connaissance", both of which translate to "knowledge."
