Math 125 web page

What type of Math 125 section should I register for?

All Math 125 sections follow the same schedule as shown in The Materials Website They cover the same material and have the same homework assignments. They also have a common final exam.

Math 125 Standard Sections:

Standard sections of Math 124 have large lectures on MWF with the professor -- and smaller quiz sections in groups of thirty students with a teaching assistant on TuTh. You are expected to attend lectures and quiz sections regularly, unless you are ill, have to isolate, or a similar good reason/emergency occurs. In case of having to miss a day of class, find out from Canvas, friends, or your TA/prof's office hours what course content and announcements you missed, and catch up promptly. Both midterms are taken during your Thursday quiz section, during weeks 4 and 8 of the quarter, respectively. Also in quiz sections there will be course worksheets, done in groups, and graded for participation. Depending on your instructor, there may also be quizzes during some weeks. See your course syllabus for the policy that applies when you have to miss a day when there is a graded exam or assignment during your quiz section.

Math 125 Hybrid Section

The lectures for the Hybrid section are pre-recorded so there are no scheduled MWF in class meetings with the professor. The lectures can be watched on a schedule set up by the student, ideally on the assigned "due" date for that lecture (deviating too much from the expected schedule for watching each lecture will cause one to fall behind in the course and perform poorly.) The quiz sections with teaching assistants work like the regular sections where regular in-person attendance is mandatory (except in case of illness or emergency), as explained above. Not having scheduled MWF lectures gives some flexibility to the students for scheduling other courses, but also a responsibility to maintain their own schedule to keep up with the assignments.

Math 125 Online Section

The Online Section, when offerred, has neither lectures nor quiz sections scheduled. The pre-recorded lectures can be watched on a schedule set up by the student, as described for the Hybrid section. The worksheets and any quizzes are done online. Instead of quiz sections, there is a discussion board for the students to participate in. While this gives a lot of flexibility to the students, it also creates more responsibility to stay on track! Being successfull in an online course takes more self-motivation. The exams of the online section are in person. The two midterms are scheduled on Thursdays during the time shown in the time schedule during weeks 4 and 8 of the quarter. The final exam is common to all Math 125 and it's at 1:30-4:20pm on the Saturday following the last day of classes of the quarter.

You may ask your advisor or contact the Mathematics Student Services Office for advice on which section to choose.
